The XIAO ePaper Display Board EE04 is Seeed's do-it-yourself e-paper board: a XIAO ESP32-S3 Plus (8 MB of PSRAM) on a carrier with a 24-pin and a 50-pin panel connector (a jumper picks which one is live), three user keys, a reset button and a battery connector with a charger. Bring your own panel - anything from a 1.54" black/white tag to the 7.5" tri-color and, on the 50-pin connector, the 7.3" Spectra 6.

It is the same XIAO ePaper driver board family the TRMNL 7.5" DIY Kit and TRMNL 4.26" DIY Kit are built on, so FrameOS already knows its wiring and runs the full on-device renderer on it.

Setup

  1. In the FrameOS backend or FrameOS Cloud, create a frame with Flash embedded device and choose ESP32-S3.
  2. Select the TRMNL 7.5" DIY Kit hardware preset - it fills in this board's pins (SCK 7, MOSI 9, CS 44, DC 10, RST 38, BUSY 4).
  3. With the 7.5" black/white panel, that's it. With another panel, pick it now. The form switches to a custom board but keeps the pins. Seeed's panels usually share their controllers with Waveshare's: pick the driver with the same size, resolution and colors in the device database - for example the 7.3" Spectra 6 on the 50-pin connector.
  4. Flash it over USB from the browser, then install scenes as usual.

Buttons and battery

The keys are on GPIO 2, 3 and 5. The preset registers GPIO 5 (plus BOOT); add the other two under GPIO buttons in the frame's settings and they arrive in scenes as button events. The battery is read through a 2:1 divider on GPIO 1, switched on by GPIO 6. The TRMNL presets carry that wiring; on a custom board enter the three values under Power so the frame shows its charge and the deep sleep options apply.

Status

🟡 Should work, not yet confirmed on real hardware. The pin map is the one the TRMNL DIY kit presets use. Tell us on GitHub or Discord if you try it.
